So, earlier this year, I had my roof replaced, and they found some holes and rotten particle board, but thankfully no critters were lurking around. A few weeks ago, my neighbor came over to inform me that she was getting her roof repaired by the same company. She was worried about the noise and mess the work might cause and promised to bring me some donuts as a peace offering. She’s definitely nicer than I am because it didn’t even cross my mind to give her a heads-up about my own roof work.
Fast forward to the completion of my neighbor’s roof repair, and she told me that they found similar issues like holes and such, but they also discovered critter nests and entry points. The workers removed all the nests, fixed the damage, and sealed off the entry points. And now, there seems to be a squirrel invasion in our neighborhood.
In the past 15-20 years, I would only spot a squirrel once a month, but in the last couple of weeks, it’s like they’ve declared a squirrel party in my yard. I see them roaming around at least 3-4 times a day, sometimes even multiple squirrels at once. They seem to favor the trees in my neighbor’s yard, using them as a secret squirrel pathway to traverse between the ground and the roof. And let me tell you, these squirrels are not your typical cute, docile creatures waiting for a Disney princess to charm them. No, they act more like tiny, hyperactive troublemakers, staring me down with their tails up high and strutting away as if daring me to challenge them.
When I’m outside, I can hear them on my neighbor’s roof, chittering and scratching, probably lamenting about their lost homes and trying to figure out a way back in. My neighbor mentioned that the squirrels now use her roof as a walnut cracking station, causing such loud noises that sometimes it sounds like a gunshot echoing through the house.
Now, every time I step out of my house, I have to do a thorough squirrel check to avoid any unexpected encounters. I definitely don’t want to end up like that poor fella I saw the other day, probably overwhelmed by the sudden squirrel takeover in our neighborhood.
