So, picture this: it’s nighttime, and I’m chilling in my cozy home in northern Minnesota when I start hearing this weird light thumping noise near the top of my exterior basement wall. It’s like a “thump, thump” or just a single “thump,” and it sounds kind of hollow. This noise pops up once or twice every minute, and it’s got me scratching my head.
Now, the strange thing is, I checked outside where the sound is coming from, and all I see is a covered wooden porch. I peeked under the porch, looking for any signs of critters or something that could be causing this noise, but there’s nothing there. No animals, no water pipes, no heating ducts – nada. And get this, I haven’t even turned on the heat yet this season, so it can’t be related to that.
At first, I thought maybe it’s mice, but it’s not the continuous tapping I’d expect if they were gnawing on something. Then I considered the possibility of it being some building material expanding due to the temperature, but it doesn’t really have that popping sound that I’d associate with thermal expansion.
