She walks me to the parking lot and casually mentions that tomorrow is my last day at the company. Like, what?! I had absolutely no clue this was coming. Turns out, I’m getting the boot right before my house closing. Talk about bad timing, right?
I’ve been grinding at this job for almost 2.5 years, and now I’m left wondering if this is a layoff or just a straight-up firing. To make matters worse, the company already axed a bunch of people not too long ago. So, am I the next casualty? Who knows. All I do know is that I’m getting the dreaded termination call tomorrow, right in the middle of my house-buying adventure.
Luckily, my boss spilled the beans in advance because she knew about my impending house purchase. She assured me it shouldn’t mess up my plans, and that’s a relief, I guess. At least my wife and I are not banking on any contingencies to seal the deal on our new place. It’s not like we’re paying in cash, but we’ve ticked off all the boxes to secure the mortgage without any hiccups.
The way I see it, I’ll still be officially employed until tomorrow. Plus, I’ve heard that lenders usually check your job status right before closing, and I should be in the clear for that. So, fingers crossed everything goes smoothly on that front.
Now, here’s the kicker. My boss says she’s cool with giving me a good reference, both professionally and personally. That’s a weight off my shoulders, knowing I won’t be starting from scratch in the job hunt. As soon as the ink dries on the house papers, I’m diving headfirst into job applications.
