Are Your Wall Studs Playing Hide and Seek?

So, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to houses and all that construction stuff, but I do like hanging things on my walls. I’ve always dealt with walls that had studs running from top to bottom, but now I’m trying to put up a guitar rack on a wall with windows. I used a stud finder and found some studs, but they’re not where I expected them to be. I’ve marked out on a picture where I think the studs are, and it looks a bit weird to me. The house was built in 1981 in Southern California, if that matters.

Here are the things that are confusing me (but it might just be me being clueless): 1) There are no studs that run from the floor to the ceiling. 2) Between the thick horizontal studs below the windows, there’s nothing. Shouldn’t there be vertical studs there too? 3) The lower horizontal stud below the left and center window seems to be a bit lower than the one on the right. Did I mess up the measurements, or is this how the studs are laid out?

I’m wondering if it’s safe to hang stuff on the horizontal studs like I normally would on the vertical ones. Can anyone help me out with this?
