So, I recently moved into this new house and found out that the previous owner had some ‘handyman’ do some questionable work. One day, a neighbor mentioned that the evaporative cooler caused a flood in his yard a year or two ago. To be safe, I called a company to come and check it out. The contractor said the unit was mostly fine, except for a makeshift fix on a valve that the handyman had done.
During the inspection, the contractor pointed out that the power cord for our unit had been spliced, and it was connected to the controller in a way that he deemed unsafe. He mentioned that it was a potential fire hazard and suggested replacing the whole system for an exorbitant price. However, a quick Google search revealed that evap coolers usually run on 110 volts, not 220 volts as he claimed.
Now, my wife is freaking out and doesn’t want us to use the unit, insisting that we need to buy a new HVAC system. I’m not convinced yet and want to know if there’s a way to check if the current setup is safe to use. Any tips or advice on how I can verify if the spliced power cord is okay?
