So, I recently had my master bathroom remodeled, ditching the old tub for a snazzy walk-in shower. The plumber did his thing, redoing all the lines and setting up the fixtures, and that’s when I noticed something odd. Now, the bathroom next door on the second floor has hot water flowing instantly, which is a total game-changer. Before, it took ages to get hot water up there, like a whole minute of waiting for it to trickle up from the basement tank.
But here’s the catch – it seems like there’s something wonky going on. It’s like there’s a leak or some kind of mix-up happening, constantly pulling hot water into the pipes. Sure, having hot water right away is convenient, but I can’t shake off the worry about the long-term costs of keeping that water heated all the time. Not to mention, it might just be wasteful in terms of water consumption.
I brought up my concerns with the general contractor, hoping for some clarity. But he seemed stumped and promised to chat with the plumber. However, I’m still in the dark, and to complicate matters, the tile guy has already sealed up the shower fixture and pipes. So, any investigation or fix would mean tearing things apart, which is not ideal.
In my quest for answers, I came across mentions of recirculating loops and pumps that could explain this mystery. But here’s the kicker – none of that was part of the renovation plan, and neither the contractor nor I have spotted any pump lurking around. So, the plot thickens, and I’m left scratching my head.
At this juncture, I’ve kind of resigned myself to the situation. My hunch is that the new shower valve might be playing a role in mixing the water even when the shower isn’t in use. Like I said, having hot water on demand is sweet, but I’m not keen on the idea of constantly heating water that’s just sitting there unused. It’s just me and my partner, so the upstairs bathrooms don’t see much action, maybe once or twice a day. On the bright side, it’s a gas water heater, so the cost isn’t breaking the bank anyway.
