Hey, so my parents just retired and decided to move closer to my brother. They’re trying to sell their old house, which is pretty run-down and needs a lot of work. They didn’t have much saved up as they immigrated to the US 30 years ago and didn’t really know how to plan for retirement properly.
The house they’re selling is about 20 minutes away from where my dad used to teach at the college. Their real estate agent suggested that if they were to fix anything, it should be the roof. But here’s the kicker – my dad is worried about dipping into his retirement savings to cover the costs of the repairs, especially since he might not make all that money back when the house sells.
It’s a tough decision because they’re also paying a mortgage on the new house they just bought. So every month, they’re already dipping into their retirement savings to cover that expense.
The question is, should my dad sell the old house as-is, hoping that someone will see its potential despite its current condition? Or should he take the risk, invest in fixing up the roof, and hope that it will attract more buyers and a higher selling price?
It’s a stressful situation for my parents, especially since they’re not used to dealing with these kinds of financial decisions. They worked hard all their lives, but now they’re facing the reality of not having enough saved up for a comfortable retirement.
I just want them to make the right choice that will benefit them in the long run. It’s a tough call, but I hope they can figure it out and come to a decision that they’re both comfortable with.
