Hey there, so my partner and I are in the process of getting a new roof for our old house. The roofers are all suggesting ridge vents, but here’s the kicker – our house, a charming relic from the 1890s, doesn’t have soffit vents. This means the only way air can circulate in our attic is through the stairway and the door to the second floor. We do have gable windows, but they’ve been sealed off at some point in the past.
I’m thinking, instead of messing with the thick boards all around the house to install soffit vents, wouldn’t it be simpler to just open up those gable windows or put in some gable vents? My partner and I are just starting out in our early twenties, so we’re trying to be savvy about our expenses.
So, the big question is: do we go ahead and have the vents installed as recommended, or do we skip them and opt to open up those gable windows for some airflow? We’ve got six hood vents on the roof that will probably be taken out either way, so that’s something to consider too.
