Hey everyone, so here’s the deal – my mom passed away earlier this year, and my husband and I are now living in her house. The place needs some serious electrical upgrades, but I’m in a bit of a pickle because I can’t seem to find the estimates she had gotten for switching from fuses to breakers. I had a family friend who’s an electrician come over to take a look and promised to give me a quote, but he ghosted me. Rude, right?
Anyway, we really need to make these upgrades. Apparently, the wires outside the house are falling apart, we need grounded outlets in all the bathrooms, the meter might need to be moved because of city regulations, and I’m planning to get three different quotes for the work. I’ve been checking out the Better Business Bureau for recommendations, but if you guys have any other suggestions, I’m all ears.
This is all new to us – we’ve never owned a home before, and my mom’s passing was so sudden that we didn’t get a chance to sort through all the house stuff beforehand. The house was built back in the 1930s, so you can imagine the state of the electrical system. Our kitchen fuse blew a while back, so we’ve been living without the fridge, oven, and proper stove. We’ve been using an extension cord for the fridge in the dining room, lighting the stove with a lighter, and the microwave has taken up residence in the dining room too. It’s a whole mess.
To top it off, we had a power surge last night, and now the furnace won’t start, despite us changing the fuses. It’s been freezing outside, and I’m at my wit’s end here. I’m completely overwhelmed and feeling clueless about all this home maintenance stuff. I don’t want to get ripped off, you know?
If any of you have been through something like this before and have any advice or insights to share, I would be forever grateful. I just need some guidance on how to navigate this situation and make sure we’re not being taken advantage of. Thanks a bunch in advance for any help you can offer.
