I’ve been dealing with our real estate agent for about five months now, and our agreement is about to end in a month. We’re thinking of letting it expire and trying out a different agent early next year. However, when we brought this up to the agent, they mentioned a $3,000 fee for canceling, terminating early, or letting the agreement expire. I have to confess I didn’t thoroughly read the contract, and this fee was tucked away as an “additional term.” The agent never mentioned this fee before we signed on with them. I’m not so much concerned about the legal aspect of this clause, though I’d appreciate any insights on that. What I really want to know is if this practice is common. I’ve never come across such a thing before. The agent didn’t make the sale, we’re not interested in continuing with them, and we just want to let the contract run its course. This is all happening in Florida. And just to clarify, I wasn’t part of the deal when the document was signed. The agent presented my elderly mother with a Docusign, and she clicked without fully understanding the terms. So, legality aside, I’m simply curious if it’s typical to charge someone to allow a contract to naturally expire. Thank you!
