As a 19 year old college student, I’m in a unique position to take advantage of a decision my parents just offered me. This year, they bought a rental property for around 80k. They recently renovated it, and now it’s probably worth more than the price they paid. Unbeknownst to me, they are now offering to sell it to me for the same price – 80k.
I’m trying to weigh my options on whether or not this is a good idea. I have 20k saved up from summer jobs and other sources of income, and I’m currently paying my parents rent with the money I’m receiving from student loans. I’ve never owned a home before, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for such a big responsibility.
So my question is – should I take this opportunity to buy the house from my parents? On one hand, it seems like a generous offer and I’d be able to save money on rent. But on the other hand, I’m not sure if I can handle the full responsibility of a home purchase. I’m also not sure if I will be able to pay the mortgage in the long term.
I think it ultimately boils down to how much confidence I have in myself and my future. If I think I can land the job I want down the line, and I’m confident I can pay the mortgage, then I should take this opportunity. If I’m not sure, then I should probably hold off for now and save up some more money.
Ultimately, I’m incredibly lucky that my parents are offering me such a generous opportunity. Many people have to save up for years to purchase a home, but I’m being given the chance to do it now. I’m still undecided, but I’m considering all my options carefully and I’m sure I’ll make the right decision for me.
