So, my folks have this huge house in a tiny town in Uttar Pradesh, India. The place is sprawling, with a ginormous common area that’s a pain to cool down. Right now, they’ve only got this puny fixed AC that doesn’t stand a chance against the heat. I mean, it’s alright when it’s just them, but when the whole gang descends for a visit, it’s a whole different story.
I’ve been thinking, maybe getting a big ol’ portable AC could be the answer. Something they can wheel around to wherever the action’s happening in that oversized common area. I know, I know, portable ACs have a rep for not being as effective, efficient, or long-lasting as those fancy split or window units, especially in a space as big as my parents’ crib. But, do we really need to go all out and install a bunch of fixed ACs that’ll mostly just be chilling when no one’s around?
So, here’s where I’m at: 1. Can these high-capacity portable ACs (like 2 tons or whatever) actually handle the job of sporadically cooling down a massive space like this? 2. What are the downsides I should watch out for, and are there any brands or models that can hold their own in this kind of setup? 3. Are there other options I should be looking at? I’m all ears for any advice, especially from anyone dealing with the same hot weather and oversized living quarters.
