What’s Causing That Mystery Smell in My Kitchen?

I wake up before my husband every morning and am always greeted by a strange musty smell in the kitchen area of our home. It’s like the scent of unwashed bedsheets or a smelly scalp, definitely a human odor. I’ve ruled out my husband as the source and suspect it might be lingering from the previous elderly owners. Our house underwent a complete renovation two years ago, so it’s puzzling that this smell persists. I can’t find the source, but it’s strongest in the kitchen and lingers throughout the day, driving me crazy. I’ve checked all the appliances, flooring, and cabinets, and they’re all new.

I’ve considered various possibilities, such as the smell seeping into the walls or floors, or even a person living in the attic. However, the absence of body odor rules out the latter. I live in a tropical environment with no crawl space, HVAC, or heating system, so mold, rotting vegetables, or dead animals are not the culprits. I’ve cleaned the dishwasher filter and disposal, and skipping a dishwasher run one night seemed to eliminate the smell the next morning. This led me to suspect an accumulation of oil in the dishwasher or sink as the likely cause of the rancid odor.

While I believe I’ve solved the mystery, I’ll keep an eye on the situation and update if the smell returns. I appreciate the insights and support from the Reddit community, especially the discussion on the Japanese term for “old man smell.” Thanks, Reddit!
