So, disaster struck today when the new windows I’ve been eagerly waiting for arrived. I had ordered these vinyl windows over two months ago from a reputable company in Atlanta. My midcentury home has existing crank aluminum windows with very narrow frames. The salesperson assured me that I wouldn’t lose any actual glass space on the three largest windows, each 9’3″x3’2″. However, the reality was far from what was promised.
The first window unloaded from the trailer was the kitchen window, and my heart sank. The framing was much wider than expected, and I immediately realized that I would be losing over 16% of glass space on this window alone. With the kitchen window shrinking from 1552 sq in to 1298 sq in, I started to panic. Yes, I had signed the contract, but what are my options now? Am I stuck with these incorrect windows?
I should have paid more attention to the specs before signing, but all I wanted was more window space, not less. I had even asked my contractor friend to enlarge another window to improve my view of the backyard, and they got that measurement wrong too. This was a significant investment for me, and I’m feeling pretty frustrated and worried.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice to offer, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m feeling lost and unsure of what steps to take next. Can these windows be fixed or replaced?
