So, my family and I moved into our Lennar-built house back in 2018, and we never got around to finishing the basement. But now, in 2026, we’re thinking about finally tackling that project. The thing is, I really don’t want to deal with adding extra duct work to our furnace. The way I see it, the basement doesn’t need to be super cold in the summer, and since no one will be living down there, it won’t need heat all the time in the winter either.
We live in Minnesota, where the winters can get pretty chilly, but even on the coldest days, our basement tends to stay at a reasonable 65 degrees or so. The main basement area is about 600 square feet, with just one forced air vent in the ceiling and one return. There’s also a fresh air intake in the furnace room, but we plan to seal that off with a door, drywall, and insulation.
So, here’s my plan: I’m thinking of installing two 72-inch 1500 watt baseboard heaters as a supplemental heat source for the basement. The idea is to use them only when someone is down there and then switch them off when the space is empty again. I know that baseboard heaters aren’t the most cost-effective option out there, but for just adding a few degrees of warmth in the winter, I think they could be the most practical solution for us.
